Mumbai Metropolitan Region To Get 1,00,000 Bike Taxis Soon, Fares To Be 60 Pc Cheaper Than Autos: Report

Mumbai: Maharashtra is set to introduce 1 lakh bike taxis across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), offering a cost-effective travel alternative. The proposal includes both fuel-powered and electric two-wheelers and is expected to receive cabinet approval later this month.

According to reports quoting transport department sources, fares for bike taxis in MMR will be around 60% of auto-rickshaw or taxi fares and these services will be accessible exclusively via ride-hailing apps.

Centre's Nod To States For Bike Taxis

The central government approved bike taxis two years ago, leaving it to individual states to establish regulations. In Maharashtra, former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde endorsed the initiative in June last year, instructing the transport department to draft rules. The department has now submitted its proposal, which is expected to be approved soon.

Terms & Conditions For App-Based Aggregators

According to a Hindustan Times report, as per the proposal, app-based aggregators must operate a minimum of 50 bikes within a 15-km radius. Additionally, 30% of their fleet must be electric, increasing by 10% annually until the entire fleet is electric within seven years. Registration fees will range from Rs 1 lakh for 50-bike fleets to Rs 5 lakh for 10,000-bike fleets.

Currently, bike taxis operate unofficially in Mumbai through various app-based aggregators. With the new policy, each bike taxi will be assigned a yellow number plate, ensuring regulation and compliance. According to the report, a transport department official stated that new rules are also being developed for social security benefits, aiming to attract legitimate operators while discouraging illegal services.

The initiative is also expected to encourage food and delivery aggregators to transition from e-bicycles to commercial two-wheelers, as there are currently no regulations governing e-bicycles.

However, the plan faces resistance from auto-rickshaws and taxi unions, who fear increased competition. Despite this, Maharashtra aims to join states like Assam, Gujarat, Delhi and Karnataka, where bike taxis are already operational.
