Mumbai Local Train Murder Case: Accused Roshan Suvarna Sent To Police Custody Till June 30

Mumbai: A day after the fatal train stabbing of 22-year-old Mayank Ramesh Lohar, accused Roshan Ramesh Suvarna, 30, was remanded to police custody until June 30 by the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Borivali on Thursday.

Court remands accused in custody
The Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP) told the court that Suvarna had attacked Lohar with the intention to murder and described the offence as grave. The police sought seven days’ custody, saying the murder weapon had not been recovered and further investigation into Suvarna’s background was required. The court granted five days.

Senior officer leads investigation
Senior police inspector Datta Khuperkar, who led the team to trace Roshan Suvarna, has been serving at the Borivali Railway police station since May 16, 2025. This is his second tenure at the Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP). He previously served there from January 20, 2024 to April 3, 2025. Khuperkar also detected the train stabbing of NM College professor Alok Kumar Singh. Khuperkar previously served with the Wadala GRP, the CID, and several police stations across Mumbai. He was also part of the investigation team that probed the Palghar sadhus’ murder case. During his tenure with the CID, he was involved in investigating the rice scam in Panvel.

Investigators are probing why Suvarna was carrying the kitchen knife, where it was sourced and the identity and work profile of the friend who allegedly sold it to him.

Eyewitness account and arrest details
According to eyewitnesses, Suvarna became agitated after some passengers allegedly shouted at him and punched him in the face, injuring him near the eye. He then unzipped his backpack, removed a newly purchased knife wrapped in brown paper and charged at Lohar, who was standing near the doorway. Suvarna allegedly stabbed him three to four times in the abdomen and chest. The police refuted claims that Suvarna was intoxicated. His lawyer, Surendra Landge, argued that the dispute began over the closing of the train door and that Lohar assaulted Suvarna, causing him to lose his spectacles and sustain injuries before he pulled out the knife.

The GRP traced Suvarna through CCTV footage from Borivali station and arrested him in Panvel at 5.55pm on Wednesday. An eyewitness from Nalasopara said, “We were terrified after seeing the blood and the knife and could not do anything because everything happened so quickly.”

Family reaction to incident
Lohar’s brother, Mehul Lohar, said, “Everyone in the family is emotionally shattered. The murderer has been arrested, but he should either be hanged or encounterkilled.”
