Mumbai: A jeweller has filed a police complaint against a businessman for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth ₹1 crore. Lalit Suresh Kawadiya (42), owner of Surbhi Jewellers, accused Suman Sodesh Bera (42), who runs Aditi Jewellers, of systematically stealing gold over several months since 2023.
Kawadiya, a resident of Dhanji Street, runs a wholesale jewellery business. After noticing stock discrepancies, he reviewed CCTV footage and allegedly found Bera distracting employees while stealing gold.
A detailed investigation into the footage revealed Bera had taken approximately 2.5 kilograms of gold jewellery since 2023. On March 16, 2024, the vigilant staff caught him red-handed.
During questioning, Bera confessed in writing in Bengali, admitting to mortgaging some stolen jewellery at Muthoot Finance to buy property. Initially, he promised to return the stolen items within eight days but later switched off his phone and cut off contact.
Kawadiya then visited Muthoot Finance in Dombivli, where he discovered that Bera had mortgaged 77 grams of gold. Following this, a case was registered under IPC Section 380 at L. T. Marg Police Station, and an investigation is underway.
