Mumbai: A 25-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at her Versova residence, leading to her husband and mother-in-law being booked for harassment and abetment to suicide. The FIR was registered on Sunday based on a complaint filed by the victim's mother, Shakuntala Shantaram Hagavane (46), a resident of Malad.
According to Hagavane’s statement, her daughter Chhaya Sachin Bachche was married in 2022. She claimed Chhaya was happy only for the initial two months of her marriage, as reported by Hindustan Times. Thereafter, she was allegedly subjected to abuse and assault by her husband, Sachin Bachche, and mother-in-law, Savita Bachche.
Hagavane mentioned that in 2024, Chhaya attempted to end her life due to the ongoing mistreatment. After she injured herself out of frustration, Sachin allegedly treated her at home and did not allow her to seek hospital care. "A few days later, when Chhaya and Sachin argued, he and Savita kicked her out of the house," as per a statement by Hagavane.
A day before her death, Chhaya called her mother and said that the two accused had threatened to kill her. On Friday, following a dispute with Sachin, Chhaya allegedly died by suicide. She was taken to Cooper Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival, as reported.
