Mumbai Coastal Road Project: BMC Plans Public Toilets, Police Chowky Near Girgaon Chowpatty, Seeks Environmental Consultant's Approval

Mumbai: As part of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP), the BMC is considering the construction of public toilets and a police chowky at the temporary slurry treatment (ST) plant site near Girgaon Chowpatty and Marine Drive.

To evaluate the feasibility of this proposal and obtain the required No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), the civic body has appointed an environmental expert consultant.

The 10.58-km coastal road stretches from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The project includes multi-level interchanges at key locations such as Haji Ali, Peddar Road (Amarsons Garden), and Worli Sea Face.

As part of the project, Larsen & Toubro, the contractors responsible for constructing the coastal road, had set up a temporary ST plant to process the silt accumulated during tunneling between the Princess Street flyover and Priyadarshini Park.

Since the project is in its final stages of completion, the civic body is now considering the construction of public toilets and a police station at the site. M/s Building Environment India Pvt. Ltd. has been appointed as the consulting firm to obtain the necessary NOC for constructing the toilets within the CRZ area.

"The consultant has also been assigned the task of constructing the walkway between Lotus Jetty and Vadodara Palace, where a protective wall will be erected. Additionally, they will be responsible for assessing the feasibility of strengthening the wall and obtaining the CRZ clearances for this work," said a civic official.

Meanwhile, a 550-meter vehicular underpass (VUP), aimed at easing traffic for motorists traveling from Dadar and Prabhadevi towards the coastal road, is expected to open next month. Additionally, a 7.5 km Marine Drive-like promenade, featuring jogging tracks, seating areas, and green spaces, will open by May 2025, stretching from Priyadarshini Park to Worli.

The BMC also plans to add a stunning new viewing deck along the walkway. Located near the iconic Haji Ali, the deck will extend approximately three meters from the walkway. A consultant has been assigned to design the viewing deck, ensuring it seamlessly integrates with the planned promenade.
