Mumbai: Car parking lift collapses residential complex in Jogeshwari; visuals surface

The residents of a society in Jogeshwari West took to Twitter and other social media platforms and vented their fear and frustration when a lift collapsed in their building for the second time - this time an automated car parking lift, however, there have been no injuries so far. According to the residents, the car was with a CNG cylinder which could’ve blasted, also last month a similar incident occurred when a lift of the same building came down. The residents have demanded that the whole building should be analyzed by the BMC and an FIR should be filed against the builders, as the families are now living in fear.

According to a social activist in the area, Mohsin Shaikh, the residents of the Universal Cubical complex, Jogeshwari West, contacted him twice regarding the lift issue. "First the lift defaulted on February 21 and fell right from the 21st floor to the ground floor and crashed, fortunately, there was no one in the lift at the time. During the second incident, the car parking lift malfunctioned and came down with a CNG car parked on it on Wednesday."

Shaikh tweeted about both incidents which made the pictures and videos of the incident go viral. "I request the BMC and the fire brigade department to analyze the whole building construction and the lifts in the building so that in future there should not be any loss to human life as the residents of the building are living in fear," he said. 

A resident of the building who did not wish to be named said that the lift keeps malfunctioning on a regular basis and last month his friend's mother was stuck in one of the lifts for more than 20 mins after which she passed out and had to be rescued. "We fear to send our children alone in the lift, we have caught our children the buttons on the lift which need to be pressed during an emergency, it is very crucial for their lives," said the resident.

When contacted the left company, they said that they have been proactively repairing the lifts from time to time and do not want any harm to be caused to any citizens. The builder and the lift company are looking to solve the issue at the earliest.
