Mumbai: BMC To Begin Post-Monsoon Repairs On Parel TT Flyover To Improve Structural Safety & Traffic Flow

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to undertake repair and rehabilitation work on the Parel TT Bridge flyover after the monsoon season. The project will include structural repairs and the replacement of bridge bearings to ensure safety and improve the riding experience on the bridge, which connects the island city to Mumbai’s eastern suburbs, as reported by The Times of India.

According to BMC officials, the flyover is being repaired due to the deterioration of the carriageway surface and the failure of the elastomeric bearings, which have flattened over time and become ineffective. As a result, the expansion joints have lost their flexibility and movement is restricted.

Further inspections revealed cracks in the diaphragm and pedestals, also attributed to the non-functional bearings. Minor cracks were identified in the girders, and vegetation growth was also noticed on the structure. Additionally, the presence of mastic patches and closely spaced expansion joints has been worsening traffic congestion, especially during peak hours.

To address these issues, the civic body plans to carry out structural upgrades and replace the bearings, reducing the number of expansion joints from 22 to 10. The current asphalt surface will be replaced with concrete, allowing for deck continuity and significantly improving the riding quality, as reported.

The work will be executed with minimal disruption to traffic. The work will be done by partially closing the bridge, with one lane shut at a time. Necessary permissions will be taken from the traffic police. The entire concreting phase is expected to take around three and a half months, with lanes reopening in sequence upon completion, as mentioned by a BMC official.
