Mumbai: BMC Launches 21st Livestock Census Across City To Track Animal Population
The BMC has started a new census in Mumbai from November 25. Enumerators appointed by the civic body are going door- to -door classifying livestock into categories such as domestic, household industry, and non-household activities.

The BMC has officially launched the 21st Livestock Census, in collaboration with the state government's Animal Husbandry Department. This extensive survey, which will continue until February 28, 2025, is designed to collect detailed data on domestic animals and birds from every household across Mumbai. Enumerators are visiting all municipal wards and villages, counting a wide range of species, including cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, poultry, dogs etc.
The livestock census is conduct in every five years. The last census was held in 2019. The BMC has started a new census in Mumbai from November 25. Enumerators appointed by the civic body are going door- to -door classifying livestock into categories such as domestic, household industry, and non-household activities. They will collect detailed information on the animals' species along with data on their age, gender, and breed.
"This information will be recorded using a mobile application, ensuring accurate and efficient data collection for the census," said BMC statement released on Saturday. The BMC urged housing society office-bearers and managing committees to grant access to enumerators to ensure accurate data collection from all households in the city. According to the data from the 20th Animal Census, the animal population within the jurisdiction of the BMC stood at 55,082. This includes cattle, buffaloes, sheep/goats, donkeys, pigs, poultry and dogs.
Highlights
*The earlier survey reveals that there are 35,572 pet dogs in Mumbai.
* Census of stray dogs conducted by BMC in 2014 revealed 95,172 stray dog population in Mumbai.
* Considering the breeding rate and litter size of dogs there may be around 1 lakh stray dogs and 70,000 - 80,000 pet dogs in Mumbai.
