Mumbai: To address the worsening Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai during the winter season, the BMC took several measures including the implementation of its dust mitigation plan.
Although the overall AQI of Mumbai has improved to ‘Moderate’ level, the BMC has been failing to address the air pollution in Govandi in the eastern suburbs. Despite several measures like installing mist machines, the Deonar-Shivaji Nagar-Govandi area consistently has remained under ‘Poor’ AQI.
“Almost all areas in the city have come either under ‘Satisfactory’ or ‘Moderate’ levels, however, Deonar continues to remain ‘Poor’. After visiting the area, it was observed that to save money, the bakeries there use cheap quality wood and waste wooden planks to burn. The poor-quality wood emits the highest amount of PM 2.5 level pollutants. It was also observed that despite repeated warnings, the locals burn garbage which is another major contributor to air pollution,” a BMC officer said.
As per Central Pollution Control Board recordings, on Wednesday the overall AQI of Mumbai remained under ‘Moderate’ level. AQI in some of the areas were: Deonar (200), Mazgaon (148), Navy Nagar-Colaba (127), BKC (123), Ghatkopar (117), Worli (100), Byculla (98) and Borivali East (83).
