Mumbai: 1 Injured Woman Dies, Another Undergoing Treatment After Slab Collapse Of 5-Storey Building In Byculla

Mumbai: A portion of a residential structure’s gallery on the fifth floor collapsed, leading to the death of a woman a day later and another woman sustaining injuries in Mumbai's Byculla. The incident occurred on May 28, 2025, at around 4:55 pm, at Ashrafi Manzil, a cessed MHADA building located on Badlu Ramgari Street, opposite Farzand Apartments, near Aasha Dham.

According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), which first reported the incident, a segment of the gallery on the top floor of the G+5 structure suddenly gave way, leading an immediate emergency response. The building, under the jurisdiction of MHADA, reportedly shows signs of structural distress, which is common among many ageing cessed buildings in South Mumbai.

Multiple agencies, including MFB, Mumbai Police, BMC’s Ward Staff, MHADA authorities, and a 108 emergency ambulance service, were immediately deployed to the spot. The injured victims were rushed to Nair Hospital for treatment.

Senior Medico Confirms Fatality In The Incident

A senior medical officer at the hospital confirmed the unfortunate demise of Naziya Khan (35), one of the two women injured in the collapse. She was pronounced dead at 2:00 am on May 29 after succumbing to her injuries. The second victim, Khushnuma Khatoon (30), remains admitted and is reported to be in stable condition.

The BMC, along with MHADA engineers, is expected to conduct a detailed audit of the remaining structure and nearby buildings to assess their safety. Local residents have expressed concern over the condition of several such structures in the area, many of which are decades old and in need of urgent repairs or redevelopment.

Authorities are now probing the cause of the collapse and evaluating if prior complaints or structural warnings had been ignored. Further action from BMC and MHADA is expected in the coming days, including possible evacuation advisories for residents of similarly vulnerable buildings.
