Mira Bhayandar: Setting a new record, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has collected Rs 241.59 crore towards property tax till 31 March 2025.
About The Current Recovery Figures
The current recovery figures specify that 86 percent of the total outstanding pegged at Rs 281 crore has been collected in the current fiscal (2024-25). Last year, the collections were limited to Rs 194 crore, indicating a Rs 48 crore rise in recovery figures. Moreover, cheques amounting to a little above Rs 8.98 crore are awaiting clearances from banks, which will further add to this year’s collection of Rs 241.59 crore (depending upon the number of negotiable instruments cleared).
Property tax contributes a lion’s share to the overall revenue generation sources of the civic body. A cursory glance at the collection figures showed a significant surge in payments received through digital modes of payment, including links on the municipal website, e-POS (point of sale) devices, and mobile applications facilitated by the civic administration. This year, around 50 percent of the dues were received from taxpayers via digital payments. While 1,40,000 people cleared their dues by depositing cheques, 1,59,560 opted to pay cash.
The property tax department had trained its focus on three major points, including continuous tax collection, comprehensive property survey and verification of information while setting up a target for the current fiscal. This is apart from training attention on property sealing drives and auctioning against chronic defaulters, while taking strict action against those who issued dud cheques to the civic body despite having insufficient funds in their bank accounts. As per the MBMC registry, the total number of taxpayers is currently pegged at around 3,58,030, including commercial, industrial, and residential users.
