Mira Bhayandar: Cops help rescue couple working as servants in Kuwait

Officials attached to the Bharosa Cell of the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police added another feather to their cap by helping rescue a couple who were allegedly confined and forced to work in an inhuman way by a family in Kuwait. The action followed after the couple tweeted their woes to their ex-employer in Bhayandar who immediately approached the Bharosa Cell for help.

According to the police, the couple in their early 40s had been hired to work as domestic servants for a family in Kuwait, through a recruitment agency. However, once they reached their workplace in Kuwait after leaving behind their two young children on April 5, 2022, the couple’s life became a nightmare. It has been alleged that they were made to do chores from early morning up to midnight. Their movement was restricted and they were not allowed to maintain contact with outsiders. The woman even suffered seizures and had to be admitted to hospital.

“Immediately after receiving the complaint, our team under the supervision of ACP Amol Mandve established contact with the Indian Embassy in Kuwait. Since the couple was bound by a works contract, the procedure of approaching the labour court there had to be followed,” said API Shinde.

After initial reluctance, the employer handed over their passports. The MBVV police and Embassy officials not only helped completing the legal formalities but ensured that their air tickets were booked and they safely reached Mumbai on Tuesday.

Not limiting their boundaries to the twin cities, district, state and country, the Bharosa cell is going the extra mile to help people in distress. The cell had recently helped rescue a 25-year-old victim of domestic violence from Central Africa and also brought back an 18-year-old maidservant who was stuck in Dubai.
