Mumbai: An ammonia gas leak occurred at Mahanand Dairy in Goregaon (East) on July 23, originating from a faulty valve in a 3,000-kilogram tank. The leak was detected around 9:12 pm and prompted an immediate response from various agencies, including the Mumbai fire brigade, Police, and HAZMAT unit.
As a precaution, the plant's electrical supply was disconnected. The leak happened inside a ground-floor refrigeration unit measuring approximately 2,000 sq. ft.

Emergency responders equipped with 25 breathing apparatus kits managed to shut off 15 to 16 valves to prevent further leakage, while HAZMAT personnel in chemical suits restricted the leak at the faulty valve using sealant from their vehicles.
Fire officials deployed three high-pressure first aid lines and a small hose line attached to a four-motor pump to neutralise the escaping ammonia. Approximately 15–20 kg of residual ammonia gas, mixed with Prizol 68 lubricant oil, was safely transferred to another reservoir tank according to report by Times Of India.
