Mumbai, August 21, 2026: The state's drive to check practical Marathi knowledge among auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers has gathered pace, with 1,499 drivers served notices in the first two days for failing the language test. On Day 2 alone, 9,233 drivers were tested across Maharashtra, of whom 1,499 were found lacking practical Marathi knowledge, according to data dated August 21.
MMR Testing Details
In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), 3,942 vehicle owners and drivers were tested on Day 2. Of these, 722 were found lacking practical Marathi knowledge and notices were issued to all of them. Outside the MMR, 5,291 were tested, with 777 failing the practical language assessment and receiving notices.
The action comes a day after RTO teams tested 1,430 drivers on Day 1 and issued notices to 422 who were found unable to demonstrate practical Marathi knowledge.
Taken together, the two-day exercise has resulted in 1,921 notices being issued to drivers, indicating a widening enforcement drive against those who do not meet the state's language requirement.
