Mahuli Fort Rescue: 2 IIT Powai Students Pulled To Safety After 10-Hour Operation In Shahapur After Trekking Mishap

Thane, April 3: Two students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Powai, were rescued after being stranded and injured on Mahuli Fort in Shahapur taluka. The students had reportedly lost their way during a trekking expedition and ended up trapped near a steep gorge, prompting an urgent rescue operation.

Emergency call triggers rescue mission

According to police officials, an emergency call was received at around 10:30 am at Shahapur Police Station, alerting authorities about the stranded trekkers.

One of the youths had sustained a serious head injury, while the other suffered a leg injury, making it impossible for them to descend on their own.

Rescue operation launched under challenging conditions

Taking immediate cognisance of the situation, the rescue operation was launched under the guidance of Tehsildar Parmeshwar Kasule and coordinated by Police Inspector Mukesh Dhage.

A trained lifesaving team was deployed to the rugged hill terrain, where they faced steep climbs, dense vegetation, and intense heat.

Trekkers located after extensive search

After nearly three hours of an extensive search operation, the team located the two injured students near the edge of a gorge, partially sheltered under a tree. The youths were found in an exhausted and distressed condition.

Rescuers quickly reached them, provided water and food, and stabilised their condition before initiating the challenging descent. The evacuation process required extreme caution and patience due to the difficult terrain and the injuries sustained by the trekkers.

Successful evacuation after 10-hour effort

After nearly 10 hours of continuous effort, the rescue team successfully brought both students down to the base of the fort by around 8 pm.

The rescued individuals were identified as Uday Yennampalli and his friend Sobhin Mayiluswami, both students of IIT Powai, Mumbai.

Team effort praised by authorities

Members of the rescue team included Sameer Chaudhary, Ravindra Madke, Raghunath Aagivale, Bhushan Vishe, Gurunath Aagivale, Ketan Aagivale, Ritesh Deshmukh, Shrikant Deshmukh, Pawan Hambir, Sameer Javare, Akshay Deshmukh, Harshad Aagivale, Yogesh Aagivale, Arjun Aagivale, and others who played a crucial role in the operation.

Speaking on the incident, Police Inspector Mukesh Dhage stated that the rescue operation was initiated immediately upon receiving the information.

Despite the challenges posed by the hilly and hazardous terrain, the team displayed exceptional bravery and coordination in ensuring the safe evacuation of the trekkers. He emphasised that such timely interventions by the lifesaving team help prevent major tragedies.
