Thane, August 24, 2026: The Transport Department has launched an inspection drive across Maharashtra to verify whether auto-rickshaw, taxi, Ola-Uber, and tourist vehicle drivers possess knowledge of the Marathi language.
In Thane, 1,183 vehicles were inspected over the past three days, and notices were issued to 89 drivers for not knowing Marathi. The drive also aims to create awareness that learning Marathi is not just a rule, but a way to ensure smooth communication with passengers.
The State Transport Department issued clear directives making it mandatory for drivers operating auto-rickshaws, taxis, Ola-Uber, and tourist vehicles in Maharashtra to have knowledge of Marathi. To help drivers arriving from other states for employment learn the language, Marathi learning classes were also organised across the state.

Marathi Language Checks Begin
Against this backdrop, under the guidance of Regional Transport Officer Hemangini Patil, the Thane department initiated the Marathi language proficiency checks. Over the last three days, 500, 355, and 328 auto-rickshaws/taxis were inspected, respectively.
During these checks, notices were issued to 31, 36, and 22 drivers, respectively. In total, 1,183 vehicles were inspected and 89 drivers faced notice actions, informed Deputy Regional Transport Officer Rohit Katkar.
