Maharashtra Healthcare Update: Gadchiroli Hospital Marks 500th Birth, Provides Free Maternal And Neonatal Care In Tribal Region

Gadchiroli, September 1, 2026: For women living in remote and tribal areas of Gadchiroli, reaching a hospital for childbirth can mean long journeys, limited transport and financial difficulties.

Against this backdrop, the birth of the 500th baby at Lloyds Kali Ammal Memorial Hospital (LKAMH) in Hedri has underscored the importance of making maternal and neonatal care accessible closer to underserved communities.

Established in 2023, LKAMH was set up to provide healthcare services to people in Gadchiroli and neighbouring regions. The hospital provides its services free of cost, helping patients from remote and economically disadvantaged communities access treatment without the burden of hospital expenses.

High-Risk Pregnancies Treated

The facility has handled several high-risk pregnancies referred from remote areas and primary health centres (PHCs), including cases involving pre-eclampsia, diabetes, low platelet counts, foetal distress and prematurity. Some women required emergency Caesarean sections, while newborns needed treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The hospital has also managed complicated twin and multiple pregnancies, including premature births requiring neonatal support. Among the challenging cases was a premature triplet pregnancy that required a Caesarean delivery followed by specialised neonatal care for the newborns.

For women living far from major hospitals, the availability of a healthcare facility closer to home can be critical, particularly when pregnancy complications require urgent intervention. Long-distance travel and delays in referrals can increase risks for both mothers and newborns, making timely local care especially important.

Focus On Accessible Maternal Care

B Prabhakaran, Managing Director, Lloyds Metals & Energy Limited, said the milestone represented more than just a number. “These are 500 families who didn't have to leave home to get the care they needed,” he said.

The hospital's services have also highlighted the role of timely referrals and coordinated maternal and neonatal care in remote regions, where access to advanced medical facilities and specialised expertise can be limited.

Kirthy Reddy, Director, Lloyds Infinite Foundation, said every delivery carried responsibility towards the mother, baby and the family, adding that the hospital staff was working to ensure that a family's location did not determine the quality of healthcare available to them.
