Maharashtra Govt Extends Insurance Cover To 1.6 Lakh Dahi Handi Govindas; ₹10 Lakh Compensation For Accidental Death

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has decided to provide insurance protection to 1.60 lakh Govindas participating in this year’s Dahi Handi celebrations, expanding the coverage in view of the growing number of participants in the festival. The Sports Department announced the decision on Thursday, saying the enhanced scheme aims to strengthen financial security for Govindas and their families in the event of accidents.

Under the scheme, ₹10 lakh compensation will be provided in the event of accidental death or permanent total disability sustained during Dahi Handi activities. Participants who suffer the loss of one hand, one leg or one eye in an accident will be eligible for ₹5 lakh compensation, while hospitalisation expenses for injuries will be covered up to ₹1 lakh.

The state government has already recognised the formation of Dahi Handi human pyramids as an adventure sport, in line with directions issued by the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court. It has also framed safety guidelines to minimise risks during the festival. In addition, Govindas injured during the celebrations are entitled to free treatment at government and semi-government hospitals.

The Sports Department said the insurance scheme will be implemented through a government insurance company selected on the basis of a premium of ₹75 or less per participant. The expenditure on the scheme will be met from the State Sports Development Fund.

Registration and verification of eligible Govindas will be carried out by the Maharashtra State Govinda Association. Only participants who meet the prescribed age criteria, undergo practice sessions and take part in the festival will be covered under the insurance scheme.
