Hockey Thane Association Launches School 9-a-Side Hockey League To Nurture Grassroots Talent

In a major push to nurture young hockey talent in Maharashtra, the Hockey Thane Association has launched the School 9-a-side Hockey League.

The league commenced on July 12, 2025, and is expected to run over eight consecutive weekends, exclusively on weekends to avoid disrupting students’ academic schedules.

Speaking on the launch, IPS Shri Krishna Prakash, President of Hockey Thane Association, said: "Hockey Thane Association is committed to the long-term development of hockey in Maharashtra. The School 9-a-side Hockey League is part of our vision to build the sport from the grassroots and provide young players the opportunity to compete, grow, and dream. Through this initiative, we aim to tap into the hidden hockey ecosystem that exists across the state."

The league has attracted 29 schools fielding 76 teams across six categories, covering Under-12, Under-14, and Under-16 age groups for both boys and girls. Played in a league format, the tournament ensures that each team gets multiple opportunities to compete. 

Over 150 matches are expected, giving young athletes invaluable match experience and exposure.

The initiative is supported by New Bombay City School, Ghansoli, which has provided its artificial turf and facilities for the matches, and the P-Cube Foundation, an organization promoting sports development. " Their collaboration has been instrumental in making this grassroots program a reality," said the representative.
