From Prasad To Power: 44 MT Wet Waste From Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh Festival To Generate Electricity
Under the ‘Prasad to Energy’ initiative, the BMC and Lalbaugcha Raja Mandal will convert around 80 MT of food and organic waste generated during Ganeshotsav into renewable electricity. Waste will be processed at biomethanation plants at four BMC hospitals, with an estimated 7,744 units of electricity to be generated for hospital use.

Mumbai: In an initiative aimed at converting festival waste into clean energy, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal have joined hands to scientifically process food and organic waste generated during the 12-day Ganeshotsav.
Food and organic waste generated during the 12-day Ganeshotsav at the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal will be converted into renewable electricity under the ‘Prasad to Energy’ initiative jointly undertaken by the mandal and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) F South ward.
Around 8 to 10 metric tonnes of food and organic waste is expected to be generated daily at the mandal’s Prasad Kaksh and Annachhatra. The waste will be segregated at source, collected through dedicated vehicles and transported to biomethanation plants at Nair Hospital, Kasturba Hospital, GTB Hospital and Sion Hospital.
Approximately 80 metric tonnes of organic waste is proposed to be processed during the festival, with an estimated generation of 7,744 units of renewable electricity. The actual power output will depend on the quantity and quality of waste received and the operating conditions of the plants.
Each biomethanation plant has a processing capacity of around 2 MT per day. Through the biomethanation process, the organic waste is converted into biogas, which is subsequently used to generate electricity. The power produced will be utilised for suitable requirements within the hospital premises, including lighting in patient wards, corridors and common areas.
The initiative was undertaken following a letter from Sudhir Salvi, honorary secretary of the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, to the assistant commissioner of the F South ward, seeking a coordinated system for the collection, transportation and scientific processing of the large quantity of wet waste generated during the festival. The biomethanation plants are operated and maintained by the BMC-appointed agency, M/s Aerocare Aviation Pvt. Ltd.
Explaining the significance of the initiative, Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management), said, “The project demonstrates how organic waste generated during major public festivals can be converted into a useful resource, while promoting source segregation, scientific waste processing, renewable energy and the principles of a circular economy.”
The initiative is part of the civic body’s efforts to reduce the burden on conventional waste-disposal systems and promote the reuse of organic waste as a source of renewable energy.Under the initiative, titled ‘Prasad to Energy’, wet waste generated at the mandal’s Prasad Kaksh and Annachhatra will be segregated at source, collected through dedicated vehicles and transported to BMC’s biomethanation plants at Nair Hospital, Kasturba Hospital, GTB Hospital and Sion Hospital.
Nearly 8 to 10 metric tonnes (MT) of food and organic waste is expected to be generated every day during the festival. Around 80 MT of organic waste is proposed to be processed over 11 days, with an estimated generation of 7,744 units of renewable electricity. The actual electricity output, however, will depend on the quantity and quality of segregated waste received and the operating conditions of the plants.
Each biomethanation plant has a processing capacity of approximately 2 MT per day. Instead of being sent for conventional disposal, the wet waste will be scientifically processed to generate biogas and electricity. The electricity generated through the process will be utilised for suitable requirements within the hospital premises, including lighting in patient wards, corridors and common areas.
