Bhiwandi: Five youths from Shanti Nagar were allegedly assaulted by a group of youths at Dindigad hill in the Bhiwandi Taluka police station limits on Sunday, following a dispute while they were visiting the area. The incident later took another turn when members of both groups allegedly confronted each other at Bhiwandi IGM Sub-District Hospital, where the injured youths had gone for treatment.

Youths stopped while visiting Dindigad hill

According to preliminary information the five youths — Altamash Shaikh (23), Umar Shaikh (24), Husnain Pathan (23), Abdurrahman Khan (23) and Rehan Khan (23) — had gone towards Dindigad hill from its foothills on Sunday, a holiday. They were allegedly stopped on the way by some youths who questioned them about their presence in the area.

A verbal altercation reportedly followed. According to the injured youths, one of the persons involved in the dispute called others to the spot, following which a group gathered and allegedly assaulted them.

Youths allege robbery attempt during attack

The youths have alleged that their two-wheelers were positioned across the road, blocking their way. They further alleged that they were threatened with a knife and an attempt was made to rob them. The youths also alleged that their mobile phones were damaged and cash was taken from them when they resisted.

However, the other side has reportedly raised objections over the youths carrying chicken, following which the dispute allegedly escalated. Police have not yet established the exact cause of the confrontation and are examining the allegations made by both sides.

Fresh clash reported at hospital

All injured youths were taken to Bhiwandi IGM Sub-District Hospital for medical treatment.

The situation reportedly became tense again at the hospital after members of both groups arrived there. A fresh confrontation allegedly broke out on the hospital premises, prompting police to intervene and bring the situation under control.

Azmi, Shaikh seek strict action

After learning about the incident, Samajwadi Party leader and MLA Abu Asim Azmi visited the hospital. He later went to the Bhiwandi Taluka police station and demanded strict action against those allegedly involved in the assault. Azmi also sought identification and legal action against those responsible for allegedly attempting to disturb law and order.

Local MLA Rais Shaikh also visited the hospital and police station. He claimed that a similar incident had occurred around three months ago and alleged that stronger action at that time could have prevented a recurrence. He urged the police to take strict action in the present case.

Police examining statements from both sides

Bhiwandi Taluka police station Senior Police Inspector Harshvardhan Barve told FPJ the police were treating the matter seriously. Statements of the injured youths are being recorded and the process of registering cases from both sides has been initiated. Appropriate legal action will be taken based on the facts that emerge during the investigation, he said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rahul Jhalte also reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. He said the investigation was underway and the situation was under control.

Police officials said they are examining what triggered the dispute, who initiated the assault and who else may have been involved. The police said the allegations made by both sides would be verified during the investigation before determining further legal action.
