Employee’s Message To Advocate Ashitosh Dubey Flags Alleged Hiring Bias, Policy Gaps At Tech Mahindra’s Goregaon BPO Unit - See Message |

Mumbai: A social media post by advocate Ashitosh Dubey has brought to light a message purportedly sent by an employee working at a business process outsourcing (BPO) unit of Tech Mahindra in Goregaon, alleging religious bias, selective hiring, and inconsistencies in workplace policies.

In the message, the employee, who claims to have joined the company four months ago and is part of a process linked to an overseas telecom client, has alleged that over 60 per cent of employees in that process are Muslim. The employee further claimed that many of these individuals are in relationships with Hindu women, stating that this has caused discomfort and unease while working in the office environment.

The message also alleges that corporate policies are not applied uniformly. It claims that Muslim women employees are permitted to wear burkha and niqab inside the office premises, and that this makes it difficult to identify individuals. The employee further alleged that during the month of Ramzan, Muslim employees are given what they describe as “total freedom”, including daily iftar gatherings held in the office canteen, where employees assemble in large numbers.

Additionally, the employee has named an HR official, alleging that the individual plays a key role in hiring and is responsible for what they describe as a skewed recruitment pattern favouring a particular community. The message further claims that there is a lack of strict corporate enforcement when it comes to these practices. These allegations, however, remain unverified and have not been independently confirmed.

Sharing the message on X, Dubey said that if the claims are true, they raise serious questions about corporate neutrality, equal opportunity employment, and adherence to standard workplace policies. He urged the company’s leadership and relevant authorities to examine the matter. At the time of publication, there has been no official response from Tech Mahindra, and it is unclear whether the employee has raised these concerns through formal internal channels.

The issue surfaces at a time when workplace practices in corporate offices in Maharashtra have come under scrutiny following a separate and more serious case reported from Nashik involving a BPO unit of Tata Consultancy Services.

According to reports, multiple women employees have accused colleagues and senior staff of sexual and psychological harassment, coercion, molestation, and rape over a period spanning two to four years. The Nashik unit, which employs around 300 people, has seen at least nine FIRs registered based on complaints filed by eight women and one male colleague.

Preliminary investigations, as reported, suggest that the accused allegedly targeted young women employees between the ages of 18 and 25, identifying those from financially vulnerable backgrounds during recruitment by collecting personal and family income details. The allegations include inappropriate remarks, unwanted physical advances, and in one instance, rape.

Some complainants have further alleged that they were pressured into complying with demands under threats related to job security and salary increments. There are also claims that certain acts were forced upon victims as part of this coercion, though these remain part of an ongoing investigation.

During this operation, an accused individual was allegedly caught engaging in inappropriate behaviour, lending weight to the complaints and leading to multiple arrests.

Those arrested, as per reports, include several team leaders, Asif Ansari, Shafi Shaikh, Shahrukh Qureshi, Raza Memon, Tausif Attar, and Mohammed Danish Shaikh, along with an HR head identified as Nida Khan, who is based in Pune.

Reports further claim that when at least one complainant approached the HR department regarding harassment, she was allegedly advised to remain calm, with certain behaviours described as “common in MNCs”. Police observations, as reported, indicate that such responses may have enabled continued misconduct, pointing towards possible lapses at the management level.
