Mumbai: The special NIA court last week refused to grant interim bail to activist Rona Wilson, an accused in the Elgar-Parishad case, who sought to attend his niece’s wedding. Wilson had approached the court seeking interim bail from January 6 to 20, to attend the wedding ceremony of his niece, daughter of his cousin sister.
The prosecution, however, objected, stating: “The offences against the applicant are quite serious. If released on bail, applicant may take undue advantage of the liberty, may tamper with the evidence and may continue to act in furtherance of conspiracy with other accused.”
The court, however, said, “The applicant wishes to attend wedding ceremony of his niece, that is cousin sister’s daughter. The relation is quite distant. His attendance at the marriage is not at all necessary.” With this the court rejected his plea for interim bail.
Wilson was arrested in June 2018 in connection with allegedly provocative speeches that were delivered at the Elgar Parishad conclave held in Pune on December 31, 2017. He was arrested following several raids at his residence in Delhi by the Pune police, from where the police is said to have recovered several letters exchanged allegedly between the accused reflecting their Maoist links.
