Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday agreed to be the deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him twice, ABP Majha reported.

BJP chief JP Nadda earlier said that the party's central leadership made a "personal request" to Fadnavis to be the deputy Chief Minister.

"BJP's central leadership has decided that Devendra Fadnavis should become a part of the Govt. So, made a personal request to him and Central leadership has said that Devendra Fadnvais should take charge as Deputy CM of Maharashtra," said BJP national president JP Nadda.

Later, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Fadnavis has agreed to be a part of the Maharashtra government that will be led by rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde.

"Devendra Fadnavis has decided to join the Maharashtra government on the request of BJP chief JP Nadda. Fadnavis's decision shows his sense of service towards the people of Maharashtra," said Shah in Hindi.

Earlier today, Fadnavis announced that Shinde will be the Chief Minister and that he will stay out of the government and ensure that it runs smoothly. "I will remain out of the government, but I shall do everything possible to make the new government a success on all fronts, and resume the developmental activities that had stopped in the past two-and-a-half years," he said.
