Central Railway Accident: Another Death On Overcrowded Thane-Dombivli Rail Stretch Raises Safety Concerns

Mumbai: In yet another tragic incident on the overcrowded Thane-Dombivli suburban railway stretch of Central Railway, a man was found unconscious between Kalwa and Mumbra stations around 9:23 PM on July 7th, near kilometer marker 38, between platforms 3 and 4. The man, estimated to be around 35 years old, was rushed to the nearest hospital by government railway police but was declared dead by the doctors.

This is the latest in a string of accidents reported from the same area in recent days. In the last week of June, a man identified as Mohammad Ayaan Jabbar Ali Shaikh, a resident of Madina Tower, Kausa, Mumbra (East), died after reportedly falling from a local train at nearly the same location—kilometer marker 38 between Mumbra and Kalwa.

In another alarming incident on June 9, over a dozen passengers reportedly fell from two trains traveling in opposite directions, over a kilometer away from pole number 38 between Mumbra and Kalwa stations.

While it is not yet confirmed whether the man in the July 7th incident fell from a moving train, initial reports and local sources suggest he may have been pushed or lost his footing due to the heavy rush inside the train on a curve. Suburban trains heading towards the Kalyan side at that hour were reportedly overcrowded. Authorities suspect the victim might have fallen due to the pressure of the crowd, but the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after the GRP completes its investigation.

The Thane-Dombivli corridor of Central Railway is one of the most congested stretches of the Mumbai suburban network, with thousands of commuters relying on the route daily. These recurring incidents have raised serious concerns about passenger safety and overcrowding on local trains. According to the GRP, between January and May 2025, a total of 34 passengers died after falling from running trains in the jurisdiction of Thane and Dombivli GRP—an average of nearly seven deaths per month.
