Mumbai, April 21: In a major push towards cashless commuting, the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) has integrated its ticketing system with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), allowing passengers to buy bus tickets using QR codes on popular apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and WhatsApp.
UPI-based ticketing rollout
With this rollout, commuters no longer need a separate ticketing app. They can simply scan QR codes and purchase tickets through apps they already use daily.
Officials said the move is part of a broader Maharashtra government plan to bring buses, metro and rail services onto a unified digital platform for smoother travel.
Digital adoption expected to rise
Currently, around 15–16% of BEST’s revenue comes from digital ticketing. With ONDC integration, this is expected to rise to 25–30% in the coming months.
“Ease of access through familiar apps will drive adoption and reduce dependency on cash transactions,” a senior official said, adding that it will also help cut queues and speed up boarding.

Boost to multi-modal connectivity
The integration is also expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity, especially for metro users, by enabling seamless transitions between different transport modes. As ONDC expands across cities and services, transport authorities see this as a step towards a more connected and commuter-friendly system.
