Mumbai: A 49-year-old assistant revenue officer recently lost nearly Rs 1 lakh after falling prey to phishing fraud.

In this type of con, cybercrooks trap the individual by posing as a representative of a known entity, be it a service provider or an institution like a bank. According to the police, the Beed resident unknowingly came into contact with scammers while trying to search the customer care helpline of his DTH service on the internet.

Impersonating company executives, the frauds asked the complainant to download a screen mirroring app and pay Rs 5 via a payment gateway app, said the police. The scammers apparently gained access to his banking details and siphoned around Rs 1 lakh.
