Mumbai: Om Prakash Sharma, 40, who was injured in a beating by a couple from Golibar, Santacruz East, on March 16, died during treatment on Wednesday. The couple has been identified as Ahmed Ansari, 26, and Aman Ansari, 24.

About The Case

According to the FIR, Sharma, a carpenter residing in Santacruz East, was returning from Omega Wine Shop with his friend Rajmangal Gupta around 4:30 pm on March 16. As they approached Sheth Chimanlal Nathuram High School, Ahmed Ansari, who was riding a high-speed scooter with his wife, suddenly came in front of Sharma.

In an attempt to save himself, Sharma reportedly said, "Are you driving a helicopter?" This remark angered Ansari and his wife. They parked their scooter, stopped Sharma, and began verbally abusing and beating him. During the altercation, Ansari allegedly picked up a cement block and struck Sharma on the head. When Gupta and some bystanders intervened, Ansari's wife allegedly assaulted Gupta as well before the couple fled on their scooter.

Gupta then rushed Sharma to VN Desai Hospital in Santacruz East, where a CT scan was performed, and Sharma received initial treatment. The doctor advised him to rest at home. However, on March 17, around 7:00 am, Sharma left home to revisit the hospital.

While passing Santacruz Gymkhana, he suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. His friends, Sachin Jadhav and Deepak Sharma, who were with him at the time, immediately rushed him back to VN Desai Hospital. Doctors admitted him to the ICU, diagnosing a severe head injury caused by the cement block.

Sharma succumbed to his injuries on March 19. His brother subsequently filed a complaint against Ansari at the Vakola Police Station. The police initially registered the case on March 17 under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. After Sharma's death, they added Section 103 (murder). The police arrested Ahmed Ansari, and the court remanded him in custody until March 21.

The accused is a painter and resides in Bandra West. His wife's parents live near Sharma's residence. The police denied any prior dispute between the accused and the deceased.
