How Japanese Tradition 'Moai' Helps People Of Okinawa Live Longer: All You Need To Know
This age-old custom helps people build strong social connections and ensures emotional and financial support throughout their lives

Most people aspire to live a long, happy, and healthy life, yet only a few achieve it. However, there is a place in Japan called Okinawa, which stands out as one of the world’s 'Blue Zones'. The regions where people consistently live longer than the global average is called the blue zones. It is common for Okinawans to remain healthy well into their 90s and even 100s. But what is their secret?
Aside from maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly, Okinawans practice a unique tradition called "Moai" (pronounced Mo-eye). This age-old custom helps people build strong social connections and ensures emotional and financial support throughout their lives.
What is Moai?
The word “Moai” comes from a Japanese term meaning “meeting for a common purpose.” Traditionally, Moai groups were formed to help community members pool resources and support one another. Over time, this evolved into a lifelong social support network.
Aislinn Kotifani writes for Bluezones.com: “Moai, one of their (Okinawans') longevity traditions, are social support groups that start in childhood and extend into the 100s. Traditionally, groups of about five young children were paired together and it’s then that they made a commitment to each other for life. As their second family, they would meet regularly with their moai for both work and play and to pool resources. Some moais have lasted over 90 years!”
Okinawans meet their Moais a few times a week, sharing experiences, discussing challenges, and celebrating both big and small successes. This strong emotional bond assures them that they always have a support system in times of need.
How Moai promotes longevity?
Gives a Sense of Purpose: The concept of Ikigai, or having a purpose in life, is deeply rooted in Okinawan culture. Being part of a Moai gives people meaningful relationships and a purpose to look forward to each day.
Encourages Healthy Habits: Moai groups often encourage members to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles. Whether it's eating nutritious meals, exercising regularly, or quitting harmful habits, like smoking and drinking. The positive influence of Moai helps the community stick to their goals for a long time.
Reduces Stress: Chronic stress is linked to conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. By fostering open communication and regular social interactions, Moai provides a safe space to express feelings, find solutions, and destress-contributing to a longer and healthier life.
Provides Emotional and Financial Support: Originally, Moai was meant to provide financial assistance, but over time, it expanded to offer emotional support as well. Studies show that social isolation leads to issues like depression, anxiety, and heart disease. In contrast, Moai creates a safety net, ensuring that no one ever feels alone during difficult times.
In modern times, issues like chronic stress, loneliness, and mental health struggles are more prevalent than ever, making the concept of Moai especially relevant. This tradition reminds us of the importance of building strong social connections, which can lead to a longer, healthier, and happier life.
