Ujjain: City celebrates after state wins Ranji Trophy

Players exchange sweets, former Ranji rookie Sahni feted.

Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): The joy of winning the Ranji Trophy by Madhya Pradesh cricket team was celebrated in Ujjain. Madhya Pradesh has won the title for the first time. Mukesh Sahni, father of Parth Sahni of Ujjain, included in state Ranji team was welcomed.

Parth Sahni has a deep relationship with Ujjain. His father Mukesh Sahni has played Ranji for Madhya Pradesh. In the final match too, Parth Sahni broke the back of Mumbai by taking 2 wickets. Sports lovers celebrated the victory of Madhya Pradesh by bursting crackers and distributing sweets at the cricket ground near Polytechnic College.

73-year-old former cricketer Rajendra Nigam said that Madhya Pradesh came close to victory in 1999 but lost in the final to become the runners-up. Chandrakant Pandit was the then captain of Madhya Pradesh. Chandrakant Pandit dons the coachís mantle now. Nigam said that better players are coming out from Ujjain.

Mukesh Sahni, resident of Dabripeetha was felicitated by members of Nagar Brahmin Samaj on the Kshipra coast. Luv Mehta and Kamlesh Trivedi were present on this occasion. Mukesh Sahni has been an excellent cricketer and he has played 12 Ranji matches for Madhya Pradesh. His son Parth took two wickets for MP while debuting in the final and after 88 years made a significant contribution in defeating a strong side like Mumbai.
