MP: Three girls drown in water-filled pit in Guna

The girls, aged five to seven years, had left home in the afternoon to head to an agricultural field, he said.

Guna (Madhya Pradesh): Three minor girls drowned in a pit filled with rainwater in Madhya Pradesh's Guna district, police said on Sunday.

The bodies of the three girls of a family were found floating in a water-filled pit at Kadiakala village on Saturday evening, Superintendent of police Pankaj Shrivastava said.

According to the information, the family members had gone to work in the fields. At home, all three sisters, Shobhana, 10, daughter of Sagar Singh and her two younger sisters Dabboo and Praja with their two younger brothers.

In the evening, when the trio was on the way to the field, there was a pit filled with water. They went close to the pit and one of the girls lost her balance and fell in the pit. To save the girl, other two girls jumped into the pit and subsequently drowned to death. 

After the incident, villagers rushed to the spot and fished out the bodies. Villagers claimed that private contractors dug this pit to excavate the murum, but left this pit unguarded after excavating the murum. There was a pall of gloom in the village as villagers demanded action against the accused contractor. 

Meanwhile, the police registered a case in the matter and handed over the bodies to the family members after the post-mortem.
