Indore: Unable To Cope Up With Failures Proves Fatal; Academic, Career Stress Takes 3 Lives

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Three students committed suicide in the city on Sunday in separate incidents allegedly due to academic and job-related stress. The deceased included a BSc first-year student from Holkar Science College, a nursing student and a law student.

"Couldn't become a nurse" – Student leaves heartbreaking message

Asha Kanungo (25), a nursing student from Seoni, was found hanging in her rented place in Maruti Nagar under Hiranagar police station limits. She pasted some notes on the wall stating that she was taking her life due to depression as she could not become a nurse and apologised to her parents.

She further wrote, she wanted to become an IAS officer and wanted to fulfill her parent’s dreams but she could not live up to their expectations.

She had been living in Indore for the past three months. When her family couldn't reach her by phone on Sunday evening, they contacted the landlord who found her hanging inside the room. Her phone has also been seized by police for further investigation.

BSc student found hanging in rented room

A 21-year-old youth, identified as Lucky Mandloi, committed suicide by hanging himself in a rented room in Samajwad Indira Nagar under Chhatripura police station limits. He had come to the city from Alirajpur just four days earlier and was living with his sister, who is preparing for UPSC exams. Lucky was a student of BSc at Holkar College.

His family members said that he showed no signs of distress, but preliminary investigation suggested that he might have been under stress due to academic pressure and competitive exam preparation. Police seized his mobile phone for further investigation.

Performed poorly in exam, law student ends life

A 21-year-old BALLB student, committed suicide by hanging himself at his place. The deceased was identified as Baliram Vaskale, a native of Khargone who was staying in Pawanpuri.

His roommate said that Baliram was reportedly under stress after performing poorly in his exams. He was a third year BALLB student and his three papers were pending.  

Psychiatrist Dr Rahul Mathur said “Students often feel hopeless after academic setbacks and are unable to share their problems openly. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly severe for those who couldn't take their Class 10 or 12 exams. Depression is increasing rapidly among youth, especially between the ages of 20 and 24. We must all stay alert to signs of mental distress around us. If someone is showing prolonged sadness, difficulty sleeping or expressing thoughts about death for more than two weeks, it should be taken seriously. Talk to them and seek professional help immediately.”

Young woman dies after consuming poison

In another incident, Yasmita Ojha, a 25-year-old resident of the Sanyogitaganj area, committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at her place. The reason behind her extreme decision is yet not known as no note was recovered from her place.
