Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The monsoon has brought good news for the residents of the city as it has pulled down the pollutants and helped improve the city’s air quality. The air quality index (AQI) in the city has remained below 100—that is, at a satisfactory level—for the past 15 days, while officials believe it will remain below 50 for many days this month.

“Yes, the air quality of the city has improved and the AQI hasn’t crossed the 100 mark after June 27. Moreover, the AQI remained below 50 for five days of the current month and dropped to the lowest in the past four months, that is, 40 on July 5,” environmentalist and former chief chemist of the Pollution Control Board Dr DK Wagela said.

Talking about the reasons for the low AQI, he said, “Rainfall has settled down the pollutants due to monsoon activities in the city. Similar conditions will prevail during spells of rainfall in the city.” The Pollution Control Board official believes that the AQI will remain at a satisfactory level for the next couple of months due to monsoon activities.

“We run various activities to spread awareness among the people to check pollution levels in the city and also regularly run a check on the industries to keep pollution levels down,” officials of the Pollution Control Board said.
