Green Spot Adopt Abhiyan: Indore Set To Go More Green With Your Help

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a move towards urban ecological development, the Indore Municipal Corporation has launched an ambitious and community-driven campaign titled ‘Green Spot Adopt Abhiyan', aimed at making every citizen a stakeholder in the city’s greenery.

The campaign, officially outlined in a meeting chaired by Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav, seeks to involve citizens, institutions and social organizations in adopting and developing green spaces across the city, including green belts, road dividers, rotaries and major intersections.

Public participation at the heart of the mission

Bhargav said, “Indore is already a leader in cleanliness and now we aim to make it number one in greenery too with the help of its people.”

Priority for adoption will be given to those who apply first and participants will be responsible not just for planting but also for maintaining and irrigating the greenery they adopt.

He added that the selection of plant species would be climate-specific to the Malwa region to ensure higher survival rates and visible development was expected within six months to set a model for others.

A greener vision for every colony

The Mayor also revealed that the city’s master plan would include the development of at least five gardens in every colony, one of which would be developed into a dense urban forest.

Track record of green efforts

Public works and garden in-charge Rajendra Rathore noted that 51 lakh plants had already been planted in Indore. In a record-breaking effort, 12.4 lakh saplings were planted in the Reoti range in a single day and they were still thriving. These plants are being irrigated using treated water from the Kabitkhedi Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), showcasing sustainable practices in urban greening.

• Sawan Laddha proposed creating an ‘ Iconic Garden’ on the scale of New York’s Central Park.

• Varsha Thakkar advocated for the removal of cable clutter to enhance city aesthetics.

• Shruti Purohit suggested developing tourist spots that highlight Indore’s natural beauty.

• Dr Kopi Maheshwari recommended turning the campaign into a competitive model to encourage quality.

• Richa Singh emphasized the importance of planting fruit-bearing and shady trees.

• Monisha Lavnani and Priyanka Das stressed the need for climate-appropriate plants and modern irrigation systems like drip irrigation.

• Sanket Barodia suggested establishing a seed bank and ensuring proper supply of manure and fertilizers.
