Kolkata: In the wake of two separate shootouts in Bhatpara within 24 hours, the Commissioner of Police of Barrackpore Manoj Varma said that within the last six months over 200 firearms were recovered from that area.

“More firearms have been recovered from this area within the last six months. Maybe people from other states are entering this state and creating confusion and violence. The prime accused behind the second incident have criminal records and a total of three people are arrested,” said Varma.

BJP spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya said that people will never be ‘safe’ under the TMC government.

“Mamata Banerjee had made Bengal a safe gateway for violence. People will never be safe under this government,” said Bhattacharya.

Senior CPI (M) leader and politburo member Sujan Chakraborty said that the TMC government had failed to maintain law and order in Bengal.

“Shootouts, atrocities have become extremely common in this state under the TMC government. Everyday disturbing news if an untoward incident comes and the government is taking no steps to curb the violence,” mentioned Chakraborty.

BJP MP who recently rejoined TMC Arjun Singh also expressed his concern over the incident.

According to police, a teenager Rohit was killed by his friend Karan Yadav after being drunk in the wee hours of Sunday. On Saturday morning, a kiln businessman Salaamuddin Ansari was shot dead in the open by his ‘acquaintance’.
