Agra: Tragedy struck Agra’s Nagla Swami village on Tuesday when six teenage girls from the same extended family drowned in the Yamuna River while making a reel video. The spot was barely 800 meters from their home. Initial videos retrieved from a mobile phone confirmed the girls were filming moments before the mishap.
Four cousins had earlier gone to the river to bathe. The girls followed shortly after and entered the water together, holding hands. As one slipped into a deep pit, the others began to drown trying to save her. Two boys attempted a rescue but had to let go when they themselves began to sink.
The police launched a rescue operation using steamers and divers stationed 2 km away. All six were eventually pulled out 1.5 km downstream. Two girls initially responded to CPR and were taken to a hospital but died hours later. The rest were found dead.
