Lucknow: Since 2017, the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has facilitated free bus travel for women during Raksha Bandhan, benefiting a total of 1,23,30,194 women over eight years. The initiative is implemented annually to provide women with accessible and safe public transport during the festival.
Free Raksha Bandhan Travel for Women from August 8 to 10
The scheme allows women to travel free of charge on state-run roadways buses. It typically runs over a three-day period; this year, it will be available from August 8 to 10. The Transport Department has spent approximately ₹101.42 crore on the initiative so far.
Participation Rose from 11 Lakh in 2017 to 29.29 Lakh in 2023
Passenger data shows a steady rise in participation: around 11 lakh women used the service in 2017, increasing to nearly 20 lakh in 2024. The highest usage was recorded in 2023, with 29.29 lakh women availing the benefit.
