Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Monday made a strong pitch for inclusive development and gender equality, calling for greater support for rural women and the transgender community. She was addressing the inaugural session of a women’s leadership conference titled "Breaking Barriers – Women in Leadership and Entrepreneurship", organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce at Hotel Taj, Lucknow.
During the event, Governor Patel felicitated 14 women achievers from various fields and urged organisers to expand recognition to rural women who are quietly transforming society. “Women are breaking barriers across sectors, but we must also acknowledge those in villages who are driving change without access to big platforms,” she said.
In a progressive appeal, the Governor called for love, education, and equal opportunities for transgender children. “Transgender children must be given the same rights as any other child. If abandoned, they must be cared for in orphanages and supported through education and training,” she added, citing success stories from Kashi and Basti where transgender individuals were being trained and employed.
Stressing on women’s safety and awareness, she said, “What women need most today is awareness of their rights and access to welfare schemes.” She spoke about initiatives linking anganwadis to universities under the KG to PG model and a special vaccination drive to protect girls from cervical cancer through HPV vaccines. “If each one of us adopts a girl child and ensures her vaccination, we can save lives and protect families,” she said.
The Governor also highlighted efforts to uplift the Musahar community, a marginalised Dalit group, by providing bicycles to school-going children and sewing machines to women for self-reliance.
Calling for unity in fighting social evils, she emphasised public participation in anti-drug campaigns and improving school and health infrastructure through community engagement.

“The day is not far when women will occupy all top positions in the country,” Governor Patel said, ending her speech on a note of optimism and resolve.
