In a major safety initiative, high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) power lines passing directly over government-run schools in Uttar Pradesh will soon be removed. This move affects primary, upper primary, and secondary schools across the state, with the power department allocating a dedicated budget of ₹80 crore for the project.
Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Chairman Dr. Ashish Kumar Goel has issued instructions to regional managing directors of Purvanchal, Madhyanchal, Paschimanchal, and Dakshinanchal power distribution zones. Committees comprising district magistrates (DM), chief development officers (CDO), basic shiksha adhikaris (BSA), and district inspectors of schools (DIOS) will identify affected schools and prioritize relocation efforts.
To minimise disruption, the line removal will ideally be scheduled during school holidays. However, if necessary, temporary closures of affected schools may also be implemented. Officials have been instructed to form these committees and conduct their first meeting within three days to initiate the process.
The move reflects growing concern over student safety and infrastructure upgrades in the education sector, aiming to prevent electrical hazards in learning environments.
