Chandigarh: Punjab police on Monday claimed to have busted a crime network linked with the foreign based Kishan gang with the arrest of its four operatives, in connection with the murder Harjinder Singh Bahman, a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor from Jandiala Guru area, Amritsar.
Director General of Police, Punjab, Gaurav Yadav said that during a chase near Fatahpur, accused Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi opened fire on the police party while in self-defence, police retaliated injuring Gopi in the right leg.
The accused was shifted to Civil Hospital, Amritsar for medical care and is currently under treatment, he said and added that the police has also recovered a Glock 9mm pistol from his possession.
It may be recalled that the councillor Harjinder Singh, 45, was shot dead in broad daylight by motorcycle-borne assailants in Chheharta locality on Sunday. The family had alleged that drug smugglers were behind his murder as he had been raising voice against them.
The SAD and Congress leaders had also slammed chief minister Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and held it responsible for the killing of the elected representative of the people in the civil body. They also held that he had been getting threats from the drug smugglers but was not provided security by the police.
