Opposition Shows Strength In Upper Assam: ‘Three Gogois’ Share Stage With Priyanka Gandhi, Call For Change
Priyanka Gandhi joined Gaurav, Akhil and Lurinjyoti Gogoi at rallies in Upper Assam, targeting the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government ahead of polls. She flagged rising prices, unemployment and hardship, urging voters to assess the past five years. Leaders also highlighted tea workers’ issues, pending ST status promises and pushed Congress’s five guarantees.
Guwahati: In a significant show of opposition unity ahead of the Assembly elections, leaders from across parties came together in Upper Assam, with the “three Gogois” sharing the stage with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi at rallies in Nazira, Tingkhong and Khowang, sharpening their attack on the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government.
The joint appearances of Gaurav Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi and Lurinjyoti Gogoi drew large crowds, particularly in Khowang, where the leaders sought to project a united front and build momentum for the opposition alliance.
Addressing the gatherings, Priyanka Gandhi focused on everyday concerns of the people, raising issues of rising prices, unemployment and what she described as a widening gap between public hardship and those in power. She urged voters to reflect on their lived experiences over the past five years, questioning whether there had been any meaningful improvement.
She highlighted the struggles of ordinary families dealing with inflation, healthcare expenses and education costs, and pointed to the continued unemployment among educated youth, many of whom are forced to leave the state in search of opportunities. Referring to Assam’s natural resources, she argued that the state’s potential remains underutilised.
The Congress leader also drew attention to the condition of tea garden workers, especially women, who continue to face difficult working conditions and limited access to basic services. She raised questions over pending promises such as granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities, alleging delays and repeated assurances without delivery.
Without naming individuals, she accused those in power of prioritising their own interests while people continue to struggle. She also alleged that dissent is being curbed and voices raising public issues are being sidelined.
Touching upon the emotional connect of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg with the people, Priyanka Gandhi said ensuring justice in matters concerning him was a responsibility beyond politics.
She also outlined the Congress party’s proposed “five guarantees”, including financial assistance for women, support for small businesses, expanded healthcare coverage, land rights for indigenous communities and assistance for senior citizens, presenting them as measures aimed at delivering tangible relief.
Speaking at the rallies, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi described the election as a turning point and urged voters to opt for change, asserting that a government responsive to the needs of the poor and marginalised was essential.

Senior leaders from the Congress and allied parties, including Jitendra Singh and Bhupesh Baghel, were also present at the rallies, underlining the importance the opposition is placing on Upper Assam in the run-up to the polls.
As campaigning intensifies, the joint rallies signal a coordinated push by opposition forces to challenge the ruling BJP, with a focus on local issues, identity and governance in the politically significant Upper Assam region.
