Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: A distressing incident from Maha Kumbh 2025 has emerged, where 80-year-old Rekha Dwivedi was left to wander alone in Prayagraj for three days after being abandoned by her children. A viral video by Dainik Bhaskar journalist Rajesh Sahu has shed light on her plight, sparking outrage and emotional reactions online.
Have a look at the video here:
Despite having four well-settled sons—a High Court lawyer and a lecturer among them—80-year-old Dwivedi was abandoned at the Maha Kumbh. When contacted through the Lost and Found centre, the sons refused to take her back, with one coldly stating, "We have nothing to do with her, goodbye."
In stark contrast, many devoted pilgrims at Maha Kumbh are seen carrying their elderly parents for miles to ensure they take a holy dip at Triveni Sangam. Some even embody the spirit of Shravan Kumar, bringing their parents in baskets from distant places. Dwivedi’s heartbreaking ordeal highlights the harsh reality of elderly abandonment in modern society.
Despite being abandoned, the frail and exhausted Dwivedi refuses to blame her sons, saying, "They are not worthless, just helpless." Holding onto the hope that they will return for her, she waited for three days—but no one had come to take her home.
The viral video sparked outrage among netizens who strongly condemned the sons' inhumane act of abandoning their mother.

Many users also called on authorities and NGOs to intervene and ensure that the elderly woman receives the care and shelter she deserves.
