IIM-Calcutta Asks To Avoid ‘Speculation’ Over Alleged Rape Inside Campus (VIDEO)

Kolkata: Amid confusion of alleged rape inside the campus of IIMC in a boy’s hostel, authorities of IIMC has issued a media statement stating that the authorities have ‘zero tolerance’ towards such incidents.

IIM Calcutta Director-in-charge Saibal Chattopadhyay said in a statement that the institute is committed to ensuring that due process is followed while safeguarding the dignity, safety, and privacy of all individuals.

“We urge everyone to avoid speculation or dissemination of unverified information which might lead to further confusion and hamper investigation and allow the investigative authorities to carry out their responsibilities independently and fairly. During this course of investigation, we will refrain from commenting further at this time, but will continue to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action as needed, in alignment with the law and our internal policies,” said the statement.

Though the police claims that the victim complained that she was allegedly raped by a student inside a hostel of the business school on Friday following which a FIR was lodged and the accused Paramananda Toppaunawar, a second-year student of IIM-C got arrested, the victim’s father claimed that her daughter was not raped and, on the contrary, claimed that her daughter was forced to write the complaint in the police station.

According to a police officer, “The woman stated in the FIR that she was called to the hostel for a counselling session. She became unconscious after consuming spiked drinks and pizza. The woman then realised she had been raped after regaining consciousness during the evening.”

The police also mentioned that the victim had mentioned that the accused had threatened her of dire consequences if she said about the incident to anyone.

Question arises: how did the woman enter the boy’s hostel inside the campus without any security check as every visitor mentioned that they had to undergo several security checks before reaching their destination.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and MoS Sukanta Majumdar said, “Law and order is in the hands of the state government and it will proceed accordingly.”

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Leader Kunal Ghosh mentioned that the ‘prompt’ state police had arrested the accused.

However, the accused will be in police custody till July 19.
