Hyderabad: Telangana's capital city Hyderabad got drenched under torrential rains on Thursday evening (August 7), with several commuters bearing the brunt of it..

The sudden downpour led to waterlogging, severe traffic jams, and electricity disruptions in several areas across the city, especially during peak hours.

IT Hub Road Turn to Rivers

The city’s tech belt, particularly Gachibowli and surrounding zones, recorded some of the highest rainfall figures, with 123.5 mm being reported. The Khajaguda Sports Complex saw similar downpours, as did localities like Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Ameerpet, Manikonda, and Khairatabad. Commuters waded through knee- to waist-deep water, with two-wheeler riders visibly struggling.

Srinagar Colony and Shaikpet also experienced major flooding, turning arterial roads into virtual streams. The traffic situation worsened as vehicles crawled along inundated roads. Hyderabad and Cyberabad traffic police worked round-the-clock, issuing alerts and managing bottlenecks, while Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams were dispatched in order to clear debris, remove fallen trees, and address dangling electric wires.

Reservoir Gate Opened, More Rain Expected

As a precaution, one gate of the Himayath Sagar reservoir was opened to release excess water into the Musi River, prompted by steady rainfall in upstream catchment areas.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted continued rainfall in the city. For Friday, residents can expect overcast skies with a strong possibility of light to moderate showers and thunderstorms, especially in the evening and night. Isolated intense spells accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are also likely.

Saturday’s outlook remains wet, with persistent rain through the day and night. Day temperatures are expected to hover around 27°C, with high humidity and wind activity.

Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors during intense spells and avoid unnecessary travel. Low-lying areas are especially vulnerable to further waterlogging, and citizens have been advised to exercise caution.
