The father of a soldier martyred in the clash with Chinese troops in Galwan valley in eastern Ladakh in June 2020 has been arrested and sent to judicial custody on charges of setting up a memorial for his son on government land.
Rajkapoor Singh, the father of Jaykishore Singh, had obstructed the movement of people on the passage leading to a colony of dalits, according to Poonam Keshri, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Mahuwa in Vaishali district.
The SDPO visited Singh and urged him to remove "encroachments" on government land within 15 days. Later proceedings under sections 107 and 188 of IPC had started against him in the court of the sub-divisional magistrate of Mahuwa. Singh has been slapped with charges under various sections of the IPC and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Singh was arrested after Harinath Ram, a resident of the area, filed an FIR alleging that the martyr's father had grabbed government land for construction of the memorial for his son.
Singh had not got permission to build a memorial on government land, Keshri said.
However, Jaykishore Singh’s younger brother, who is a member of the paramilitary forces, disputed Harinath Ram’s claim and said his brother's memorial was built on his family land and claimed that his father has been falsely implicated under the SC/ST Act to prevent him getting bail.
The police entered their house late last evening and dragged his father out, the soldier claimed. The police then thrashed his father and took him away, he alleged, adding that the officer-in-charge of Jandaha police station had led assault on the family members.
