Assam: 'End Intellectual Terrorism,' Says MLA Manab Deka During Budget Debate, Highlights Semiconductor Push | VIDEO

Guwahati, July 14: BJP MLA from Lakhimpur constituency Manab Deka on Tuesday called for an end to what he described as “intellectual terrorism”, alleging that some individuals spread false information on social media platforms and create a negative perception of Assam among the global business community, investors and tourists.

Participating in the budget discussion in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Deka thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabarua and highlighted the importance of the state government’s semiconductor and Aviation Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) initiatives.

Focus on semiconductor industry

Emphasising the significance of the semiconductor industry, Deka said the government was adopting a futuristic approach. He remarked that while petroleum was the fuel of the 20th century, semiconductors were the fuel of the 21st century.

“The value of semiconductors is much more than what the value of petroleum was in the 20th century. Today, this government is opening the gates to the future by creating an environment for the semiconductor industry,” he said.

He added that industrial growth would accelerate as several sectors depend on semiconductors and referred to the rise of China and Taiwan as major centres of electronics manufacturing.

Taking a swipe at the opposition, Deka said those who livestream from Ganeshguri while opposing development projects should end their double standards, as they are often the same voices that criticise the government for a lack of development.

“The opposition should make it clear what they want. If they want development, they should join hands and become brand ambassadors of the semiconductor industry, be it Leader of the Opposition Wazed Ali Choudhury or Akhil Gogoi,” he said.

Call for investment in Assam

Referring to the improved security situation in the state, Deka thanked the government for ending terrorism in Assam but said “intellectual terrorism” must also be addressed. He alleged that misinformation circulated on social media creates an adverse impression of the state among the international business community.

“I request the Chief Minister, with folded hands, to bring investors like Adani and Ambani to the State. If I get a chance to host them in Lakhimpur, I would do so with a grand traditional welcome,” he said.

He stressed the need to attract investment across multiple sectors to accelerate Assam’s economic growth.
