Assam Rains: At Least 5 Dead Due To Landslide Incidents In Kamrup (Metro) District, Red Alert In Several Districts

Guwahati: At least five people lost their lives due to landslide incidents in Kamrup (Metro) district in the past 24 hours as heavy rains lashed the state. As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a total of three districts and five Revenue Circles have been affected by Urban Flood.

The affected districts are Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro) & Cachar and 10,150 people have been affected, ASDMA said. Floods have been reported from many parts of the state, including Lakhimpur.

Out of the five people, three were killed in the landslide in the Bonda area on the outskirts of the city on Friday evening, Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Hazarika said as reported by PTI.

Baruah inspected the severe waterlogging in Guwahati on Friday, While speaking to reports, the state minister said several agencies were working to provide relief and rescue to affected people.

Meanwhile, large parts of the Lakhimpur district have been inundated as water reached the downstream areas following heavy rains in bordering Arunachal Pradesh. Multiple agencies have been taking part in rescue operations. A large number of people have been evacuated to safer locations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a red alert in several districts of Assam, including Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Darrang and Udalguri.

As per Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a 'red alert' was sounded for as many as 18 districts on Friday, with the state facing an 'abnormal situation' due to incessant downpours caused by massive cloud cover over several parts of the northeast.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has also been recorded in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, aggravating the situation in Assam, especially Guwahati.
