Arunachal Pradesh Shaken By Series Of Earthquakes, 5.1-Magnitude Quake Hits Upper Siang

Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang district was jolted by a series of earthquakes early on Thursday, with the strongest measuring 5.1 magnitude, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). No immediate loss of life or damage to property was reported, officials said.

The 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck at 5.45 am at a depth of 11 km. Its epicentre was located 116 km north-northwest of Pangin at latitude 29.124°N and longitude 94.856°E, the NCS said.

Tremors Begin Before Dawn

The main earthquake was preceded by three smaller tremors in the early hours of Thursday. A 2.8-magnitude tremor struck at 3.40 am at a depth of 5 km, followed by a 3.2-magnitude quake at 3.55 am. Another 2.8-magnitude tremor was recorded at 4.34 am.

After the 5.1-magnitude earthquake, another tremor measuring 3.5 magnitude was recorded at 7.17 am at a depth of 5 km. The series of tremors meant the region experienced sustained seismic activity over several hours.

Region No Stranger To Quakes

The tremors came after earthquake activity was reported in Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday. According to the information available, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck the state at around 3.36 pm, while a weaker tremor measuring 3.4 magnitude had occurred minutes earlier. Assam’s Nagaon district was also hit by a 3.1-magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, the Indian Express reports.

The repeated tremors are significant given Arunachal Pradesh’s location in a highly earthquake-prone part of the country. Arunachal Pradesh and the wider Northeast fall under Seismic Zone V and are highly susceptible to tectonic activity because of the complex fault systems beneath the Eastern Himalayas.

No Damage Reported

Despite the repeated seismic activity, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property following Thursday’s 5.1-magnitude earthquake.

The cluster of tremors over a short period once again highlights the seismic vulnerability of Arunachal Pradesh and the wider Northeast, where earthquakes are a persistent natural risk.
