Goa: Konkan Railway police recover gold ornaments worth Rs 5 lakhs from Vasco thief

Since it is suspected that the arrested accused is involved in similar cases at Konkan Railway Police Station, four days police custody has been obtained for further investigation

Margao: The Konkan Railway police station has arrested a thief involved in snatching a bag from a railway passenger and recovered gold ornaments valued around Rs five lakhs, besides cash of Rs 20,000.

The incident occurred at the Margao railway station on June 24 when complainant Sunita U Nair, resident of Ahmedabad-Gujarat along with her family members was travelling from Ahmedabad to Kannur on the Coimbatore Express train.

At about 03.30 hrs when the train left Margao Railway Station, one unknown accused person snatched a handbag from her possession and jumped from the train when it was at a slow speed and disappeared in the dark.

The handbag contained gold ornaments worth Rs five lakh and cash of Rs 20,000. After the RPF lodged the complaint, the Konkan Railway police station commenced investigations into the case.

From the modus operandi, one Aslam Kalager s/o Chandsab Kalager, aged 27 yrs, resident of Fakirgalli, Vasco was identified and was traced out at Vasco within six hours of registration of offence.

DySP Gurudas Kadam informed that during the investigation, all the gold ornaments belonging to the complainant lady has been recovered at the instance of the accused from his rented room at Vasco.

Another pair of diamond-studded earrings worth Rs 70,000 has been also recovered at the instance of the accused person which inadvertently was not mentioned by the complainant in her complaint.

Since it is suspected that the arrested accused is involved in similar cases at Konkan Railway Police Station, four days police custody has been obtained for further investigation under the supervision of SP, Sammy Tavares.
