Vasco police on Monday arrested Sanil Dessai of Desterro-Baina on charges of swindling people and preparing forged documents to obtain loans from two cooperative banks.

Police said two cases had been registered against Dessai and there is a possibility of further complaints against Dessai.

Speaking to reporters, Vasco Police Inspector Kapil Nayak said police were on the lookout for Dessai since the last one year but he had been evading arrest.

“Based on reliable information, Dessai was seen around the South Goa district hospital in Margao on Sunday. A Vasco police team nabbed Dessai and arrested him under Sections 120B, 465, 468, 471, 420 read with 34 IPC.”

"A bank manager of a cooperative bank had complained in 2021 to the effect that in 2014, Sanil Dessai and another person with their common intention had allegedly hatched a conspiracy of cheating and prepared a forged agreement for sale of two flats at Dabolim. They produced the same as genuine to obtain a mortgage loan of Rs 29.48 lakh in the name of Sanil Dessai and failed to repay the loan, thereby cheating the bank," said Nayak.

"In another case, upon the order of court, a complaint was registered in 2022 where one Abhishek Rai stated that between March and July 2017, Sanil Dessai requested him to stand as guarantor for personal loan of Rs 25 Lakh in another cooperative credit society and fraudulently deceived him and took his signature on the loan documents of another accused from Baina before the bank for the purchase of two flats in Dabolim.”

“Both the accused with their common intention cheated Rai to sign before the bank to avail loan of Rs 25 lakh. It was only after he received notices from the bank, that Rai realised that he was cheated by Dessai," said PI Nayak.

PI Nayak said Dessai is suspected to be involved in another offence, adding that there are possibilities of other such complaints.

“We appeal to people to be careful while giving their documents to such people who misuse the documents for frauds," said Nayak.

Vasco PSIs Swapnil Naik and Rohan Nageshkar are investigating the case under the supervision of PI Kapil Nayak.
